About

“Authentic” is a word often attached to food,

but there are two very different definitions.

(At Yellow Ranger, we like the first version better than the second.)

1. True to one's own personality, spirit, or character.

  • Creates something new

  • Reflects an individual viewpoint

  • Diversity of ideas

  • Encourages differences of opinion

  • Many reference points

  • Breaks the rules

  • For anyone

  • Inclusionary

2. Made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles the original.

  • Recreates something existing

  • Reflects a collective viewpoint

  • Homogenization of ideas

  • Encourages conformity

  • One “original” reference point

  • Follows the rules

  • For those that already “get it”

  • Exclusionary

We’re doing things differently.

Our food is a genuine expression of our unique perspective.

You can check your expectations at the door.

We can’t wait to serve you.

A Letter from Chef:

“Our Love,

Our Way.”

FAQ

  • Yellow Ranger serves casual American-Chinese bar food within neighborhood cocktail dive The Golden Horn.  We wanted to create a quirky, vibey, and unpretentious yet entirely memorable bar/restaurant.  The kind of spot you invite your visiting friends to show them what Austin is all about.  The kind of spot you can feel just as comfortable on a laid back date night as you can shooting a game of darts or pool with friends after work.  The kind of spot we miss seeing all over town, and the kind of spot folks are still moving here looking for.

  • We’re in the North Loop neighborhood at 5420 Airport Blvd in North-Central Austin.  You know where Burger Tex used to be?  You know where Barfly’s is?  We’re there.  Located 5 minutes from Mueller, 8 minutes from UT Campus, and only a couple of blocks off of I-35 and Hwy 290. Look for the giant pylon sign and the Barfly’s neon. Get here; no excuses.

  • We’re open from noon to 1am seven days a week.  Our Lunch Menu is available from noon to 4pm.  Our Late Nite Menu is available from 10pm to 1am.

  • Our restaurant is small and fiercely independent.  We started this with way more passion than startup funds because we believe that our community can and will support us without meddling investors or crippling bank loans.  Every plate we sell is a gesture of love: love for our employees, for the cuisine, for the ingredients, for the farmers, for the guests.  We treat our employees the best we possibly can.  We don’t waste food, but instead use our cheffy skills to transform it into other delicious stuff.  We are a small team that finds joy in every aspect of what we do.  We hope this energy translates into a truly excellent and memorable experience for y’all.  We hope that your support makes our small business sustainably successful.

  • Yes.  Yep.  Oui, Chef.  Vegan and vegetarian options are marked on our menu with little green symbols. We try to cook for all dietary restrictions as best we can.  If you have a serious allergy or intolerance, please call the restaurant in advance to confirm we can take care of you.  Please, please, please let us know about your allergy so we can take the extra steps to avoid any potential cross-contamination.

  • Gluten-free, yes! Half of our menu is naturally gluten-free.

Celiac, not so much, unfortunately. The problem child here is our Shaoxing wine, which we use liberally as a core part of our seasoning. Although Shaoxing wine is made from rice and no wheat products are added, the yeast used to ferment the wine is derived from a wheat-based starter. If you have celiac disease it's safer to abstain. Let us know at the restaurant and we can whip you up a Shaoxing-free Fried Rice or a chow mein-free Chinese Chicken Salad (during lunch hours).

  • The Golden Horn is a neighborhood cocktail dive brought to you by the same talented folks behind Barfly’s, Violet Crown Social Club, Bender Bar, The Hideout, and Pourhouse Pints & Pies.  We are friends and collaborators with The Golden Horn and share our dining space, but we are separate companies.  Look for our Yellow Ranger touches on the cocktail menu, like our house made Oolong kombucha!  The Golden Horn is open for all your cocktail, mocktail, beer, wine, and cider needs from noon to 2am seven days a week.

  • Grab a drink from the bar. Because we are a separate company from The Golden Horn, you cannot place food orders with a bartender. Instead, pick a spot to chill and scan the nearest QR code to see our menu and place an order. You'll find QR's all around the bar area, on every dining table, and throughout the covered patio. We will deliver your food to you at the table where you scanned the code. If you have any issues with the QR codes, have food allergy or dietary concerns, or simply want to be guided through the menu by a real human, come see us under the Yellow Ranger menu board and we will take care of you!

  • At Yellow Ranger we believe that every member of our team is equally essential, be they server, cook, or dishwasher. We distribute tips equally amongst all hourly employees regardless of position. This tip pool ensures each and every one of workers consistently earns an above average wage that actually meets or exceeds the cost of living in Austin right now. Our team works tirelessly to provide y'all with the highest quality food and service; all gratuities are very much appreciated.

  • We are walk-in only!

  • 10-20 people?  Probably.  30+ people?  Doubtful.  Our space is laid out for lounging and mingling with small groups, not for throwing banquets.  Again, we don’t take reservations, so if you’re rolling deep, plan ahead and don’t be surprised if y’all have to sit in separate areas.  You can always call the restaurant to chat about specific scenarios, but we can only do so much with the existing space. Please reach out to Hello@yellowrangeratx.com with any venue buyout or special event requests! Catering inquiries may be made online through the form under the Catering tab.

  • Well behaved kiddos are welcome before 10pm!  Parents, please bear in mind, however, that our space was designed with adults in mind, therefore we do not provide the full range of child amenities.  No kids menu, no high chairs, no changing tables, no play area.  After 10pm we politely decline all underage guests for safety reasons as well as the comfort of our late night bar crowd.

  • Well trained dogs are more than welcome on our covered patio!  You can order food directly from the QR codes outside and we will bring it out to y’all!

  • We offer free lot parking and there is plenty of street parking behind us on Middle Fiskville Road.  It gets crowded on the weekends, so walking, biking, carpooling, rideshare, and public transportation are always encouraged!  There are bike racks below the stairs to Barfly’s on the South side of the building.

  • Our core menu is available through Toast online ordering HERE. Simply place your order, arrive at the restaurant at your scheduled pickup time, and give us your name at the bar. If online ordering is unavailable or the scheduled pickup times are super long, it means we’re getting absolutely destroyed at the restaurant and we need to catch up before we take more orders!

  • If you’re ordering for more than 8 people, we strongly recommend calling ahead.  We are a small team in a small kitchen and we would hate to keep y’all waiting forever as we try to cook and box up 5,000 egg rolls.  Catering inquiries may be made online through our Catering tab HERE.

  • We’d love to offer delivery someday if we can figure out how to do it ourselves.  The truth is, we can’t stand greedy, exploitative third party companies like UberEats or DoorDash.  They take a massive cut of our already tiny profit margin, they treat their drivers horribly, and their apps are glitchy and difficult to manage.  Your food can get lost or damaged and we can’t do much to fix it or might never even find out about the issue!  If y’all want to pay tons of fees to get cold, soggy slop thrown onto your porch, order from somewhere else.  If y’all want to have awesome food served to you with love, come see us at the restaurant.

  • Our menu shifts and evolves regularly with the seasons and with the vision of our chef team.  If you want specifics on ingredients and preparations, your best bet is to call or come down here and ask to speak to one of the chefs; we’ll be happy to talk your ear off about what we’re cooking today.

  • Hell yeah we do. We don't use MSG in every dish, but it definitely appears here and there throughout our menu. Why? Because it's crazy delicious and totally not bad for you. We could go on a long-winded rant about how "MSG is harmful" is a completely fabricated myth rooted in racism, but y'all can just Google it and see for yourself. Feel free to chat with us in person about MSG. If you're adamant about avoiding it, we can steer you to the dishes without it.
